Blueberrying on Cape Ann - a Recipe from the Cook's Book

Jean, our front desk receptionist, who has been with the Seaward Inn for many, many years, tells the story of a special guest named Mary. Mary loved the Seaward Inn and would always stay for about ( 2 ) weeks. She returned year after year, only varying this routine when original owners, Mr and Mrs Cameron, retired.
Mary was well known to the other guests, Seaward Staff, neighbors and Cameron family because her favorite pastime was to go blueberrying.

Every morning she could be seen with her tin can scouring the bushes for blueberries behind Gullsnest, in the sancturay and neighboring Cameron Cottages. Later, she would bring them to the kitchen where Mrs. Cameron made them into Blueberry muffins.

Every year, Mary would vacation alone but it wasn't long before she was part of the Seaward Inn family. Mary stayed in Gulls Nest and had her own (reserved ) table in the right hand corner of the brick dining room.

Occasionally, we are asked if the blueberries come from the grounds of the Inn by some of our old time guests. In season, they often do. If we had more "Mary's" they always would and recall those little things in life that make a difference!

A visit to the Inn is after all, more like an experience, where you step back in time and recall those little things in life that make a difference!

Blueberry muffins

CREAM:
1/4 cup margarine
1/2 cup sugar

ADD:
2 eggs -Beat until creamy

SIFT TOGETHER AND ADD:
2 cups sifted flour - reserve 1/4 cup flour.
Sprinkle over 1 1/2 cups blueberries.
Stir into batter last.
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

ADD:
1 cup milk -Stir only to dampen flour. Do not over beat. Fill greased and floured muffin tins two-thirds full. Preheat oven and bake at 400 degrees F or 205 C for 15 to 20 minutes.

*A good muffin batter will look lumpy. Most muffin recipes will make a dozen muffins depending on the size of muffin tin

Fisherman's Secret Recipe at the Sea Garden Restaurant

A most enduring memory of many guests of the Seaward Inn, is waking to the aroma of freshly baked pastries and brewing coffee, permeating the morning air. Of most interest, once the coffee begins to take effect, is the Anadama bread and our original "secret" recipe. As a matter of fact, the story, to the delight of our guests, is printed on the back of our menus.

Legend tells of an unhappy fisherman, who's wife would only serve him warm cornmeal each evening after a hard day at sea. Tired of her lackluster interest in cooking, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Craving bread, the fisherman added flour, yeast and molasses to the warm cornmeal, mixed and baked it. All the while he was muttering angrily "Anna"-"Damn her" ! The result of his concoction turned out to be chewy, sweet, dense, grainy and delicious. It wasn't long before neighbors began asking for and copying the recipe. Anadama Bread has now become a New England treat. It is baked by our own Chef Peter and served in the Seaward Inn's, Sea Garden Restaurant.
